View Full Version : Nick_Hiatts_Demo_Reel
nick_hiatt 06-07-2002, 04:32 PM This is work from my demo reel,
I have recently graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale with a Bachelors in Media Arts and Animation.
The 3d was created in Maya, the textures were custom made in Phot Shop, and the post work was all done in after effects.

Hotter than the peperoni's you put-in-on the pizza!!:buttrock:
Where did you hide that avi link?!
Use the IMG tag to link to images on your site if you want to include more than one image in your post. If you use attachment option, you only get one choise.
I like the bug thing at the bottom.

OOww, need to say something constructive. Here goes...
3 things that struck be
1) love first characters design. Nicely executed, posed 'n' all.
2)Interier_1, Lots of mood in the environment , that single image communicates a whole story.
3)Exterier_3 - Lovely composistion; eyes kept busy; whos your daddy; Lots of deph.

im not going to say anything about your animation.
your models are cool i like your style ...not too realistic yet not too cartoony.
war:
1.your shot should cut to a different angle when your quadraped turns and fires (9-11 secs in). it's just a straight on uninteresting symmetrical shot (for the most part).
2.i think you have an unnecessary jump cut 11-12 secs in.
ahh...there's always more to nit-pick about but im not gonna..pretty good.
so where'd you go to school and when'd you graduate. unless this is a demo reel based off work you did for a company?

thanks for the critique everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive been working so much in a short amount of time on this project, its good to get some outside feedback. :)
-I would have liked to change some of the shots and different transitions, but of course (like every thing in life) I was
under the mercy of time.
- I am thinking of changing some things around but it all depends on the amount of time between work and my free time. do you think I should finish the original shots i had planed or shold i just move on to a new project.
(im currently working on a music video for the band - Dead Star Assembly- this is a group project between allot of south florida artist , many of which attend AIFL.
ill post up my work from there upon completion
check out www.deadstarassembly.com for some images of the video to be released late summer.

for you finishing your project i think that should be your call.
whether or not you want to finish or if you're truly tired of working with same guys for soooo long.
on one hand you can say i've learned enough it's time to go on and create bigger and better things (so to speak.)
and then on the other hand you can say look what i did...i finished it and i am COMPLETLY satisfied with the final result let's move on to something else..
but if you think about it...who is ever completly satisfied with their work...if you are then whats the point of starting on a new project and accepting new challenges.

Nice Job. Really good lighting and texturing. It looks like you spent alot of time on the details.
The reel flows great with the audio.

I spent 11 weeks designing and storyboarding
11 weeks modeling
11 weeks texturing
11 weeks animating and compositing
I would have liked to have spent way more time animating
but there was a dead line.

I tried your site, but using flash makes it diffcult to downlad. You can't use download managers like getright. Can you post direct links.:thumbsdow

seems, we had the same idea about that alien character:
here's my version

;)
Take a look on my homepage (http://home.arcor.de/bibi5000/) for more pictures.

i love your character design
what software did you use?

He's built in Max 4 with polys and rendered in Renderman.
The idea comes from a game I'm working on just for fun (you know these projects? It will be NEVER finished...)
I put up a with the concept of the game (http://home.arcor.de/bibi5000/). It's all in german, but you can try some of these (http://www.babelfish.org/) for a quick and silly translation. :D
Uuups, I just noticed I posted this link already. Sorry, I just got out of my bed...
Make them fight? Hmmmm, maybe I should try to bone him in Maya, but this will take a little because I'm in the process of taking my first little steps in f*%§ Maya.
Your demo Reel: I love the camera work; the lighting in your game sequences bugs me a little bit but this depends on the viewers taste. Nice & very professional work! :applause:

thanks,
I would have like to have more time to spend on the the lighting.
thats one area that I could definetaly use work on.
Fot the lights geomotry I Renderd them out seperatly and put a glow on them in post so they look hot or like the illuminating.
But I think there is no real fall off of individual lights in my scene.
I would have liked to have fix that but there just not enough time.
thanks again

I'm in love with the guy doing the thrust-assisted jumping:drool:. The design of such an armour with those thrust-arms seems very original and cool to me. Neato.
