I'm rendering a simple mivie slate.

the scene is composed by:
movie slate (posed on the floor)
floor
3 lights:
main: 75% brigtness, shadow AREA
second: main: 30% brigtness, shadow AREA
third: 30%, no shadow

the res is 2126*2126 300 dpi.
no radiosity.

what i noticed is that if i try to set shadows to soft, the calculation becames really less time consumpting.

another thing is that i have to render two version, one all B/W and another like the FCP logo, so with a color display.
The model is sligtly different rite for the presenze of the display.
and it seems that the render of the color version became super slow at the display rendering.
The matierial for the display is set like this:
color: 255/1/18 bright: 69%
transp: 255 255 255 58% 1 refraction
specul: 50% 31% 0% 0 plastic.

render settings:
GENERAL
antialiasing Geometry,
filter still image,
transparency with refraction (maybe i should disble it)
reflection all obj
shadow all type

SAVE
format TIFF
8bit/channel
spi 300
Alpha channle
24bit dith

EFFECTS
enabled obj glow and lens efffect

OPTIONS
textues
blurry effect (i forgot to disable it)
ray dept: 6
reflection depth 2
shadow depth 6
thershold 0%
level of det 100%

Multipass enabled

As you note, the slowness is due to the area shadows. They are just huge cpu hogs in Cinema, and when you combine them with refraction things only get worse. Maybe try using clusters of lights in place of the area shadow lights.

its the area shadows that are time consuming, they're slow compares to the other shadow modes, if you want fast renders use soft shadows

yeah, i used those becuase the effect was really good, i mean relly matching what i was looking for.

I'll try spending much time setting a group of lights, thx AdmaT and Squidnic

yea I swear area to soft shadows can take a scene from 3 mins to 30 mins instantely. Ohh yea spots instead of omnis can save you a little time as well, just thought I would point that out.

I have no idea about your scene and the objects in it, but since there is no refraction going on in the above material, I think maybe you could save some time by scrapping the transparency and use plain alpha instead... if possible

That should work james as he appears to have no Reflection either.

Alpha with Reflection is pretty much impossible though.

yea a value of 0 refraction is pretty much useless though. unless you need the reflections and all.

rite JIII , because of the LCD part i need a reflection/refraction.

but as mentioned before my thought about area shadows has been confirmed.
I'll use other types

Aha - didn't catch the reflectivity bit... bummer.
