View Full Version : Workstation video cards & stability?
detolleme 11-04-2003, 12:25 AM I've been thinking about trying an entry-level workstation video card such as the ATi FireGL T2-128 or the PNY QuadroFX 500. (One reason I'm looking at the entry-level cards, besides price, is that they have VGA connectors. While I could afford a more expensive card, I can't afford a more expensive card and a digital monitor also.)
Anyone here have any experience using workstation-class video cards with AM? Any difference in stability?

I have an nVIDIA Quadro4 380 XGL at work and it's fine with AM. For the money at home I'd go with an ATI Radeon 9800. It's just as fast with AM as my Quadro and is much cheaper.

Most procards that have DVI come with a DVI to VGA converter for each of the DVI jacks unless you buy them white boxed; however, you can pick up DVI to VGA converters off pricewatch for about $8-$12. Concidering you can save $100+ on white box pro cards. A $88-$92 savings when you include adaptors isn't bad.

When I upgraded my system, I got a Quadro 4 XGL 980, which came with two DVI to VGA adapters. I don't know what the other Quadro cards come with. I would guess that however many DVI ports the card has, that's how many adapters you'll get.
Just this week, I got around to trying AM on this system, and the speed is very good. In fact, the FPS indicator shows negative numbers! Perhaps time travel IS possible! ;)
AM works in both OpenGL and Direct3D modes with this card. My old GeForce MX 400 wouldn't work at all in AM in Direct3D.
I can't tell whether the Quadro card has anything to do with stability, but using 10.5o, I've only had one crash, and that after several hours of working on a project.
