View Full Version : How to add colour to sketches??
brobins 06-07-2002, 02:43 PM Hi,
I have seen a few of you with scanned in pencil sketches and you have digitaly added colour over the top instead of using regualar pencil crayon, markers, pens etc
I am interested in trying this, but think I need a bit of guidence
I have photoshop 7, illustrator 10 and a wacom tablet, also painter 7 i think
What is the best way to go about this??
Scan image at a good res, save as Tiff, open in photoshop and paint directly onto layers and mess with transparacy??
Thanks for any help, and sorry for sounding dumb!

You can paint over the top, but it quickly gets awkward to see your line work under it. I usually scan my drawings at the size I want at 400DPI. Only 300DPI is really necessary, but it's always good to have a little leeway for resizing in the future. I also usually save as an .EPS file.
With the scanned image in Photoshop, I copy the layer with the drawing on it (so that it's no longer the background layer) and set it to Multiply mode. This way the white of the paper (presuming the drawing is on white paper drops out. Then create a layer (or layers) under the drawing layer and paint away. This method means that your drawing is always on top, kind of like cell painting. I always avoid painting on the same layer as the drawing. Paint over it by all means, but it's best to keep your original image clean.
Hope this helps

Here's a quick step by step paintover I did for someone else:

This technique varies for different subjects, and is more used for concept art than anything trying to be realistic.
