Jesse Sandifer has entered the ALIENWARE Challenge.

I do have a concept, I just gotta finish drawing it up and pulling the pieces together. Stay tuned...
man, I hope I can actually finish this challenge...

Here is my first quick idea of how this alienworld would look. The spherical orbish things sift out these bubble like resources that spiral into the civilization type area right underneath. The inhabitance sucks in the bubbles and in turn, the tendrils stemming off reach up between each of the orb areas. In between the orb areas will be a light creeping through to somewhere unknown. I'll also show some detail images of what I was thinking this would look like. Of course, I plan on doing a good colored concept image for submission and better clarification of this, but I wanted to put the idea out there.

A quick look at the civilization (seemingly abandoned)----drawing kinda squished vertically right now, it'll look taller....

The blue squiggles indicate where this light will be coming from and where the tendrils will reach to. You're looking straight up at the ceiling.....
OFF TO DO THE REAL CONCEPT IMAGE!

your concept remind me of flowers somehow, i like the idea and style of the sketches, Well -if you didn't- I suggest you see others threads some Ideas may be different but have the same composition, beware of that...
I think the colors will make this terrific, specially if those bubbles have a bright color and beneath dark with glows and such things anyway you have lot of choises just see what fits...
11-04-2003, 04:15 AM
I think for composition, I may go for a view that looks across these tendrils past the civilization area and up towards the orb thing where the bubbles would come out and you could see the blue light pouring through......I'll convey this with my concept image. :lightbulb

Here is an updated look at what my concept is. Instead of it sitting on a ground, this seemingly abandoned civilization will be hanging by these veiny tendrils that reach into the blue light areas. There will be many of these hanging perhaps at different heights and with different sizes and proportions.

Be patient with me, I'm still learning this whole posting process. I'll get this extra stuff off my thread!

This is an update on my concept. I got rid of the weird looking civilization and put in something more simple. This is a REALLY bad scan, but once I get the inkwork done over this blue line sketch, I'll have something to paint up for the final.

lookin sweet, like the detailed sketches--reminds me of a jellyfish....love to see an updated composition of the entire world....
11-08-2003, 05:49 AM
Does anyone have any comments or suggestions???:curious:
I'm working on figuring out the rest of the composition, but how about how it looks so far as a concept? I know it's kinda weird, but I think I explained it well. Let me know if it's gonna take more description to get it across.
11-08-2003, 06:02 AM
i like it dude! It looks like someplace an alien would hold you before they did freaky experiments on you, kinda scary. :)

Next step is Photoshop painting to indicate the color and mood feel of this thing. (Remember the bubbles are coming from the orb into the outreaching and twisted tendrils, not the other way around. I think that will come across a little better in the final piece.) :)

Well, after thinking about my recently posted concept and looking at it with a different pair of eyes, I've decided to change my idea up quite a bit. :lightbulb
I'll post the line art tomorrow and explain the new concept a little. I think it will lead to a better entry and more interesting composition. The scale will be immense and the colors should bring out an interesting mood.

This is my final concept. It's more of a cave type setting with something mysterious floating in the center. I'm pretty happy with this concept so I will continue on with 3D finally!
11-30-2003, 08:02 PM
Any comments or suggestions on the concept? I haven't really gotten any feedback on my ideas and it would be nice to have some outside opinion on them. Thanks in advance! :)

concept sketch is looking good, but i wonder if it's too symmetrical, anyone else have any thoughts?
12-01-2003, 06:23 PM
I guess the idea could work, but you'd need to place the camera somewhere else. Closer to the central thingy and below it looking upwards for instance.
12-01-2003, 06:34 PM
Great ideas! I was actually thinking the same thing about the POV. I wanted to be able to show what everything is in the cave area first then nail the camera when I start modeling. I think the looking up idea is cool too, should look really interesting!
12-01-2003, 06:52 PM
looks tough though....if you look upwards you won't be able to look down onto the little floating world, but if you look down you'll miss the light source....toughie....maybe mock up some shots and post...
12-01-2003, 06:54 PM
here's what i'd think about: there's three focal points: the light, the world, the underworld...they say a triangle of focal points can often create a good composition, maybe you should play with moving the light source to the side, but still shining light on the little world?...i don't know, something to think about....
12-02-2003, 12:34 AM
The atmosphere of this piece is very good. A far, centered light source like that can make the composition seem very epic.
12-02-2003, 01:46 AM
BFC: I like the idea of the upper light source coming from the side somewhere. I'll mess with that idea and see if it will work. I think the only true way to get this composition down is to set up a simple model of it and start laying out different cameras. I'll start messing with that so I can post some different angles and get some feedback on those ideas.
tr1cky: I totally agree. I really want this to look epic. That's what I envisioned when I closed my eyes to see what this alienworld would look like to me....thanks for the comment!

I'm excited to see how your entry turns out. The cave idea looks really cool!
12-04-2003, 03:07 AM
that is realy great, hey Sandpiper how about doing some test models and lighting then find out what POV is better for your concept, realy good work keep it up.

I would totally love to post some stuff that I've done, but I'm swamped with work all of a sudden. This seems to happen with any challenge I enter! Of course, I'm just glad that I have this work to keep me alive. :)
I do have a rough model that I had made about two weeks ago, but it's not quite there yet to show. Maybe I'll try to squeeze in some time before Christmas to crank on it some more! Thanks for the comments....
