Render as *.tga sequence and import sequence into post-program (ie - After Effects).

but is there a way to do it in maya, i have 2d drawn images, and i want them to cast shadows. I know i need to use raytrace, but its not working

You probably need to turn on Raytracing (depending on what program you are using) Depthmap shadows don't do transparency.
Try putting this in the appropriate forum for the program type.
Edit -you posted as I did.
Use Raytrace shadows for the light, and turn on Raytracing in the render globals.

it's basically a hack (since u have 2 objects, 1 for shadows, 1 for visibility) but their results look pretty good.
