Title: Jester
Name: Raphael Boyon
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

Here is my latest work
I wanted to create a cool and colorful jester with attitude. I also wanted him to make you slightly uncomfortable... not the kind of guy you would invite to a kid's birthday party.
Hope you like it!
Will post a making of and some higher res close ups shortly

Very nice job on this man!
I think you could get him a little more dirty...
But it looks great!

Thanks guys for the sweet comments!
Thanks for the crits too as they make a lot of sense. I am making a mental note of them for the next one that should be a native American

I will post some more making off stuff as soon as I come back from vacation. Wireframe too. However it's not so interesting as it is using displacement. I am used to doing cleaner wires for game art or anything animated.

Thanks again!

Hi Raphael,

I can only repeat what the others have said: Itīs a beautiful work.
I wonder how you did the shading/lighting. Did you use mental rays blackbody shader here ? Or any kind of certain exposure control setting to get this impressive ligthing ? The light arrangement itself is complex but pretty interesting.

Cool work!
Love it.

Beautiful work on all the detail and the clothing, not to mention his face! His headdress is just fantastic.
Definitely gives the impression of a questionable character that you dont really want near your kids

Thanks a lot guys
As for the lighting I think I've posted te whole setup
It's a regular gamma 2.2 workflow with mental ray. Nothing fancy. Hope it helps
The image is going to be published in 3dWorld (october) and 3D creative (October and december with a complete making off) if there is anything you can get out of it.
Cheers!

I'd like to say I love the expression and the fact he's an older, experienced dude who's seen it all and is cynical about the foolishness he sees in others...like the elizabethan fools whose job it was to ground the king in reality.....this is Lear's fool , not the clown ....we aren't fooled by his cp...he's a really smart guy. Conhratulations!

It's funny, I actually said to myself, this guy makes me uncomfortable, not the kind of guy I would have at a kid's bday party, then I read your description. So I guess you nailed it!

I'm not sure if anyone else has noted the hidden Ace of Spades in his left hand. Great touch. I was sitting here thinking "wait, he's only holding 3 aces," and then I saw it.

Awesome!!!
How many days or months do you spent working on it? :)

Bohemond
11-19-2011, 01:14 PM
Thanks guys
I spent 5 month in my spare time on this. Some times motivated, sometimes not touching it for a month
I would say two or three weeks total of effective work are more than enough for a piece like that. Roughly

@ScarletShark: nice catch! That was my very purpose when creating this piece :-)
